Advocate's fee schedule

Professional fees applicable from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2026.

Standard professional rate R1,200.00 per hour

General professional rate

The standard professional rate is R1,200.00 per hour.
Unless otherwise agreed in writing, all preparation, consultations, drafting, research, correspondence, conferences, consideration of documents and related professional work will be charged at the standard hourly rate.
Where a fixed appearance fee or day fee is quoted, such fee ordinarily relates to the appearance itself and does not include substantial preparation, drafting, consultations, travelling time, written submissions or post-hearing work unless expressly stated.
All fees are exclusive of VAT, where applicable.
Reasonable travelling expenses, accommodation, toll fees, parking, courier charges, printing and other necessary disbursements are charged separately where incurred.

Where extensive documentation requires consideration prior to consultation, preparation is charged separately at the standard hourly rate.

Short written opinion involving limited factual and legal complexity: R3,600.00 – R6,000.00
Standard written legal opinion: R6,000.00 – R12,000.00
Complex or substantial written opinion involving extensive research, legislation, authorities or documentation: R12,000.00 upwards

Urgent opinions may attract an increased fee depending upon the urgency, complexity and volume of material.

Where appropriate, opinions may alternatively be charged at R1,200.00 per hour.

Notices, routine interlocutory documents and short procedural documents: R1,200.00 – R3,600.00
Affidavits of moderate complexity: R3,600.00 – R7,200.00
Substantial founding, answering or replying affidavits: R6,000.00 – R15,000.00
Particulars of claim, pleas and counterclaims: R4,800.00 – R10,000.00
Complex pleadings: R8,000.00 – R15,000.00
Heads of argument: R6,000.00 – R15,000.00
Complex or voluminous heads of argument: R12,000.00 upwards
Practice notes: R1,200.00 – R3,600.00
Draft orders: R1,200.00 – R2,400.00
Notices of motion and interlocutory applications: R2,400.00 – R6,000.00
Substantial applications, including Rule 30, Rule 30A, Rule 35, Rule 43, Rule 58 and contempt proceedings: R6,000.00 – R15,000.00 depending on complexity

Drafting may alternatively be charged strictly according to time spent at R1,200.00 per hour.

Opposed motion, half day: R5,500.00 – R7,500.00
Opposed motion, full day: R8,000.00 – R10,000.00
Trial, half day: R6,000.00 – R7,500.00
Trial, full day: R9,000.00 – R11,000.00
Further consecutive trial day: R8,500.00 – R10,000.00
Urgent application: From R7,500.00 excluding preparation
Criminal bail application: R6,000.00 – R10,000.00
Opposed bail application involving substantial evidence or Schedule 5/6 considerations: R8,000.00 – R12,000.00
Sentencing proceedings: R5,000.00 – R8,000.00

Unopposed motion: R5,000.00 – R7,500.00
Opposed motion, half day: R7,500.00 – R10,000.00
Opposed motion, full day: R10,000.00 – R12,500.00
Trial, half day: R7,500.00 – R10,000.00
